This sander is awesome. It is very versital. The orbital sanding attachment strips paint away. The finger tool gets into the hard to get corners really well. It is a lot quieter than the ryobi sander I have and way more functional. The cyclonic dust filter is great as well. Not nearly as much saw dust flying around. I am in the process of refinishing kitchen cabinetry from white paint to a natural finish. This sander is great.

This was my first sander purchase so I did a little more research than a normal person. I looked at lot of other random orbit sanders even some with variable speed adjustment, but they ranged up to $150. This has various attachments and I bought it mainly for the job of sanding around one foot border of my living room 600 sqft floor. It did a great job. The "finish" and "detail" sanding attachments work wonder with the furniture also. Just for the heck of it, I tried removing paint from my wood paneling, and it worked fine.

Although, I bought it in a a Black and Decker store for $39.99, but I'd advice it for the current price of $49.95 also.

The dust filter barely does it job, and leaves quite a dust outside also. But, for this price, I wouldn't complain. I wouldn't recommend it for the ceiling since the dust would fall right on your face, but maybe ok for some minor jobs.

All in all, a great buy.

I do alot of furniture and cabinet refinishing and I think this is the best little sander in the world. It collects the dust as you go along and it has a pointed tip so you can reach any corner when sanding down furniture. It is light weight and very easy on the wrists. I don't need to wear a mask because the dust is contained. I love this little sander!!!!

Black & Decker MS500 Mouse Sander/Polisher

Amazon.com Review

The smooth, contoured grip on Black & Decker's Mouse sander/polisher fits snugly in your hand, making this tool remarkably easy to use. The two interchangeable bases are easy to put on and take off (although we had to do it a couple of times to get the hang of it). The iron shaped base is specially designed for larger sanding, scrubbing, and polishing jobs, while the base with a detail tip is perfect for maneuvering in smaller, hard-to-reach areas. The Velcro fastening system makes paper changes quick and easy, saving you both time and frustration. And, because the tip of the sandpaper commonly wears out first, each sheet of sandpaper comes with an extra tab; simply rip the tab off along the perforated lines and use it to replace the tip when it wears out. The Mouse runs at 11,000 orbits per minute, a nice balance between strength and finesse.

We tested ours sanding in between chair spindles and were immediately impressed with the smooth (and fast) results. Then we switched bases and put the Mouse to work on larger surfaces; vibration was minimal. The Mouse is easy to control--which is a big plus if you plan to use the tool for long periods of time. It's a great buy for home hobbyists. In fact, when you get right down to it, your imagination might be the only limit on how many projects this tool can tackle. --Dori Anvinson

3.0 out of 5 stars Paper cost exceeds Mouse cost after 5 purchases, November 10, 2001

I wish I'd read the posts warning about the cost of the paper before I bought the Mouse. It's a very useful little tool, and it's easy to think of uses for it. Unfortunately, each use means a trip to the store for paper or pads. The paper is horribly expensive, and it's not feasible to substitute for it. I've used my Mouse on only about a dozen minor projects over the last year but have easily spent 3X the original cost of the unit on paper and pads.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sander good, paper too expensive and hard to find, August 17, 2001

This is a useful and well-made sander, but it only uses Black and Decker paper that costs [a lot of money] for 5 sheets (if you can even find the paper - it is here on Amazon.com, but usually is hard to find at a hardware store), making it too expensive to use a lot. Orbital sanders with standard size disks or palm sanders that use 1/4 sheets of regular sandpaper are much more economical - about one tenth the cost. It has performed well the times I used it, but I almost never use it due to the expensive paper (that lasts no longer than other paper - you will use up several sheets on a small project).

This review is from: Black & Decker MS500 Mouse Sander/Polisher (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is a versatile sander/polisher (depending on what type of abrasive naterial you velcro-attach to the hook and loop base) that can tackle small jobs such as refurbishing furniture as well as medium-heavy ones including removing old paint from small sections of a house's exterior!

Advantages include its light weight, making it easier to handle for long periods of time; a pointed tip for sanding in tight places such as where wood meets at 90 degrees; and the ease of changing the sanding material. It's also priced well; however, you should look at the similarly priced kit on Amazon.com that also comes with sanding/polishing materials.

The disadvantages are relative to your job. It's certainly not as powerful as the typical orbital sander, and therefore will be slower and more tiring for large jobs such as exterior paint removal (after the surface has been prepped by chipping away at old paint). In fact, I generally wouldn't recommend it paint removal/wood... Read more

Black & Decker MT1405B-2 14.4-Volt Cordless Multi Tool

Amazon.com

Black & Decker has taken five popular home workshop tools and put them together into one compact, cordless unit in the Black & Decker 14.4-volt cordless multi-tool kit. The 14.4-volt model offers five interchangeable, locking heads that provide drill/driver, circular saw, jig saw, router and sander/polisher features. While not as powerful or feature-laden as most stand-alones, the multi-tool provides an excellent starting point or addition to a home enthusiast's arsenal. The drill head operates at variable speeds of 0-700 rpm. A 24-position clutch provides up to 115 in./lbs. of torque. And a 3/8-inch keyless chuck makes bit changes easy. The 3-3/8 inch circular saw features a 20-tooth carbide tipped blade and operates at 0-1,100 rpm. A spindle lock allows quick blade changes, while a thin kerf minimizes waste. The jigsaw features Black & Decker's exclusive, tool-free QuickClamp blade change system. A see-through bezel offers a cleaner view of the cut line, while a blade support roller keeps the blade straight for an accurate finish. The router features a 1/4-inch collet and spindle lock. Good visibility, micro-depth adjustments and an operating speed of 0-8,000 rpm make it well-suited for small, high-speed project work. The sander/polisher is also versatile. It reaches into tight spaces, accepts Mouse attachments, and spins at 0-8,000 opm.--Carl Thress

2.0 out of 5 stars Do you all work for Black and Decker?, February 10, 2004

It's a great idea but if you are going to do a day or weekend long project that would require one or more of the attachments, get extra batteries! The only attachments that didn't kill the battery quickly were the drill and maybe the saw wasn't great. The other pieces especially the router and jigsaw drained both batteries noticably in about 15 minutes. I've found the router adequate only for edge and laminate work but way underpowered for anything else.
Don't even get me started on the safety start mechanism. You must depress a button on the attachments before the trigger will engage. This is especially maddening and awkward with the router.
Save your money and buy the real versions of each tool you really need instead of this poor compromise on all of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid tool; smart design., January 5, 2003

All interchangable heads mounted easily, quickly and securely. Drill: two (variable) speeds; adjustable clutch; nice amount of torque. Router: only mounts 1/4" bits; does a nice job edging shelves; worked surprisingly well. Sander: of limited use, but it worked fine; lots of B+D "Mouse" accessories available. Jig Saw: cuts quickly; buy an assortment of blades (metal, wood, etc). Circular Saw: cuts very quickly with little waste (thin kerf); great for sheets of plywood, mdf board and drywall; only cuts to a depth of one-inch. Overall, this tool is great for the small home workshop. I feel at ease when the kids cut wood for birdhouses using this tool rather than a full-size C-saw or (eeek!) a tablesaw. Comes with two batteries... should be good enough for most projects. Has a quality feel to it.

Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Black & Decker MT1405B-2 14.4-Volt Cordless Multi Tool (Tools & Home Improvement)
I liked this tool. The only thing I can suggest to make it better is to get more batteries. They seem to need a recharge rather quickly. With only two batteries, I was killing both before the first one could recharge. I got 3 batteries and a quick charger to be able to keep up with use. Even still, it was not enough battery juice. I'd give 5 stars except for the short battery life when used with attachments other than the drill.
